Suella: Anti-Muslim

Suella Braverman is making headlines for her article in the Telegraph: 'Islamists are now in charge of Britain' and 'Islamists are bullying Britain into submission'.

Firstly, the correct term is Muslims, not Islamists. This is purposefully done to link Muslims to ISIS, because Braverman and others in politics see Muslims as a terror threat, when we're just everyday people living our lives guided by our religion. It is no different to Christians, Jews, and other denominations doing the same.

Secondly, her statement is not only completely wrong, but deeply impactful. Muslims aren't in charge of Britain; the PM is Hindu but this does not mean Hindus are in charge of Britain. Her choice of words in 'bullying' is to portray Muslims as thugs and people who spend their entire time concocting ways to attack Britain. I am a Muslim and I know many others. I can attest that this is absolutely NOT what we do, and the fact that I have to come out and explicitly say this is hurtful and offensive. I would not expect Christians/Jews and every other faith to declare their intentions in terms of terror.

Braverman uses the word 'submission' deliberately because ironically, she's using terror tactics for the British people to believe their freedom is under attack from Muslims. 'Submission' is a very religiously affiliated word - you submit to your 'Creator' if you are of a faith. Braverman is attempting to reinforce the rhetoric that Britain is being forced under the control of terrifying 'Islamists'.

Conservative MP Lee Anderson made similar remarks to Braverman and has now been suspended, after Mayor of London Sadiq Khan questioned how this could be said without repercussion.

Both Anderson and Braverman are gravely wrong. Why has Braverman not been suspended from the Conservative Party? Anderson has gone on to say he refuses to apologise. No.10 have stayed quiet. How is this allowed to happen? If these comments were said about Britain being bullied by Jews, or Christians, there would be uproar. In fact, the article would never have been published - how is it ok for The Telegraph to print this type of Islamophobic content?

The thing is, Braverman will only be punished if the public cares enough. No.10 doesn't care about what is right and wrong - Sunak will not make a decision unless he is forced to, which speaks volumes about the integrity of political parties in 2024.

THIS is exactly why we have voter apathy. Parties could not care less about how their actions, words, and rhetoric impact the lives of the everyday person. Sky News reported a mass increase in Islamophobic attacks after the Palestine conflict, and now for a former Home Secretary to act in this way?

Right now, I do not have any confidence in either Labour or the Conservatives leading government.
