Eid ul-Fitr!
It's Eid! And one day after my birthday, the stars must have aligned :)
Eid marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Because Ramadan is centered around discipline and fasting, Eid is a celebration to mark the end of the holy month. During this time, Muslims get together, wear new clothes, and eat lots of amazing food. The food is usually extravagant because of the one month fasting before!
It is traditionally celebrated for three days. Since Eid is today (April 10th), it will last until April 12th. Eid is only declared if the moon is sighted the night before on the 29th of Ramadan. You may have seen people's confusion over Eid; this is because different people follow different countries such as Saudi Arabia and Morocco, so their moon sightings will differ. Ramadan started a day later for me, so my family has had 29 fasts this year, whereas people following Saudi Arabia have had 30 fasts.
It is nice for Eid therefore to be on one day for all Muslims, a 'united Eid' that is not always common. It is such a nice feeling to know others around the world are getting dressed up and celebrating with you.
